Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope Review

best telescope

The Celestron NexStar 6 SE Reflector telescope is excellent performer and a no brainer to add to the recommendations of best telescopes on the market. All of these telescopes look great and and also give you great performance. The next sized telescope in the Celestron range of reflectors, is the larger cousin to the NexStar 4 SE, and this scope is upsized from 100 mm to a superb 150 mm aperture.

The NexStar 6 SE is Celestron’s latest Schmidt – Cassegrain telescope design, providing 1.5 metres of focal length, in the same stunning metallic orange optical tube. With an aperture of 150 mm this telescope offers brilliant clear images using superior optical components coated with high transmission coatings. The increase in aperture size actually represents a huge 44% more light gathering than a 125 mm telescope, and a whopping 60% more light than the 100 mm lens. The NexStar 6 SE is powerful yet portable, coming in at a total compact package of around 15 kg in weight. So by the mathematics of optica design, you get a massive increase in image clarity and magnification, without the impost of additional weight and bulk.

The reason I like to recommend the Celestron NexStar telescopes is that they all come equipped with the fantastic automated SkyAlign technology for simple alignment and tracking functions. This computerized telescope is so simple to use, that you will never again be caught fumbling in the dark, or losing focus on your target. The Celestron NexStar 6 SE is controlled by a easy to use hand remote control panel which means you can operated the telescope with hands off the actual instrument, which eliminates the risk of bumping, wobbling or otherwise disturbing the sensitive instrumentation which can spoil your viewing pleasure.

With SkyAlign you will no longer need to rely on a finder scope to align the telescope. With the power of computer automation all you need to do is enter the date and time relevant to your location. With a very rough aim – you still need to point it at three bright objects in the sky – the telescope is ready and the computer takes over and does all the hard work for you. SkyAlign is completely automatic and you can select any target object from the database, and the telescope will do everything for you. The computer manages all the tasks from aiming, to tracking and ensuring a sharp focus on the object no matter how fast it tracks across the sky, or how long you want to maintain your field of view.

Not only is the computerised alignment a huge plus with this telescope, but the software that comes with it is also extremely useful and provides you with the latest information. The computer will give you the names of the target stars, and allows the telescope to align with any object you choose, such as stars, planets, and galaxies by just pushing a button. Needless to say, by using the computer automation, you also have the bonus of much more accurate tracking than a human can manage, which makes it easy to get high power views of the night sky.

Here is a neat trick – you can also navigate with the “Two Star align” and “Solar System align” modes which comes into its own early in the evening when not all the stars are visible yet. The NexStar SkyAlign system can get up and running with just two objects such as Venus and Mars, depending on your location. By the time the heavens become fully dark, the Celestron NexStar 6 SE telescope is already on the job and providing you with an early curtain raiser to the main show.

The other thing you could look at buying is the AC power adapter which is not included in the sale of this instrument. Otherwise you can probably expect to drain a set of batteries almost every night, which is fine if you are not within reach of a power source, but a bit of a pain if you want to leave the telescope set and in position for the next session.

What are the General Features of the Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope:

  • 150 mm Schmidt-Cassegrain optical design telescope
  • SE series combines the classic heritage of the original metallic orange tube telescopes with the latest computer technology
  • StarBright XLT high transmission optical coatings
  • Quick release fittings mean you do not need tools for setup

Where can I buy a Celestron NexStar 6 SE Computerised Telescope?

No longer do you need to spend time learning your craft.  If you are a beginner or an experienced astronomer, the NexStar 6 SE is a very forgiving instrument, but an extremely capable telescope, and you will be able to focus on the universe, rather than fussing over the equipment.
